On November 17, 2023, Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) collaborated with ALLTRADE and SHELL Canada to organize a field trip to Scotford Solar Farm, Canada’s largest behind-the-meter renewable energy generation site. The event was a resounding success, attracting a diverse audience of university students, energy professionals, and even a father-son duo electrical engineers, all eager to gain insights into this rapidly expanding sector.

The event commenced with a roundtable introduction, followed by an enlightening presentation by Joanna Osawe, President & CEO of WiRE. Subsequently, the site’s manager and co-manager, Mike and Jessie, along with Susan Courty, a WiRE Alberta Chapter Leader, conducted a safety check and delivered an informative and engaging presentation.

An interactive Q&A session ensued, leading to a walkthrough of one of the site’s largest sections of panels. Donned in personal protective equipment, attendees had the unique opportunity to experience an installation of this magnitude up close, a first for many, which was met with visible awe.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mike, Jessie, Susan, and the entire ALLTRADE and Shell teams for their invaluable contribution in making this event a grand success. Special recognition goes to Cindy, the site’s current caretaker, whose warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to interact with her.

A lot of great connections were made, everyone was networking, sharing knowledge, asking questions, and genuinely learning from each other. We eagerly anticipate our next event and the continued exploration of renewable energy!
