WiRE Field Trip at Scotford Solar Farm: Behind-the-Meter Industrial Energy

WiRE Field Trip at Scotford Solar Farm: Behind-the-Meter Industrial Energy

Date: November 17, 2023

Time: 11am - 3pm MDT

Where: Scotford Solar Farm, 21456 Township Road 516 Strathcona County, AB

Join us for an exciting and educational field trip to Scotford Solar Farm, one of the largest solar projects to date in Alberta!

The Scotford Solar Farm PV generation potential is approximately 80 MW dc and is a solar facility that provides behind-the-meter power to Shell Canada’s Scotford Complex. Scotford is a major industrial site that includes a refinery, a chemicals plant, and a carbon capture and storage facility.

This field trip is hosted by Alltrade Industrial Contractors and Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE). Alltrade performed the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) aspects of the project and can provide valuable insights into the work that was involved with completing a project of this scale. Alltrade is not just the electrical contractor that performs 100% of the electrical scope of work, but also acts as EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction). Scotford is the largest “behind-the-meter” project in Canada, meaning that 100% of the power generated at site is used on the Shell plant and not exported to the grid.

The field trip will include a tour of the solar farm site, a viewing of the major components of utility-scale PV generation, and a presentation on the construction activities involving civil and electrical work. You will have an opportunity to learn about the design, installation, and operation of the solar farm, as well as the benefits and challenges of behind-the-meter power for industrial customers. You will also have the opportunity to network with professionals and students from the renewable energy industry and academia. You will also learn about the benefits of the solar farm to the community including job creation and economic stimulation, and what tradework opportunities there are among these types of projects.

The field trip will take place on November 17, 2023, from 11am to 3pm. The meeting point will be at the Scotford Solar Farm, located at 53.82339, -113.0943 (by GPS) approximately 45 minute drive from city centre Edmonton.

By vehicle, approach to the Shell Complex is from either HWY 15 or 16 and Range Road 214. Private road onto site is accessed via Township Road 561.

Note - Transportation will not be provided, so please arrange your own carpooling, as there is no Public Transit available.

Please wear appropriate clothing for the November weather conditions, and footwear for outdoor conditions. Attendees are responsible to bring their own Personal Protective Equipment including Hard Hat, safety glasses, Hi-Vis clothing / Vest, and Steel toe footwear. Contact Susan Courty for more information regarding PPE, and directions.

The field trip is open to all genders and backgrounds, but space is limited, so don’t miss this opportunity!

We look forward to seeing you at Scotford Solar Farm!
